Chapter 11

Adrian didn’t see Kyle much for the next few days. Either repairing the fence or getting the bunkhouse ready for Parker and Will, there was always something that had to be done on a working ranch. They barely crossed paths.

Adrian didn’t know if Kyle was regretting the job offer now or the kiss. Or both.

He was bent over files of deposits when he heard the shuffle of Kyle’s feet on the wood flooring. He didn’t look up when Kyle unceremoniously dropped into one of the chairs adjacent the desk. If the man wanted to talk, he’d speak.

He finally broke the quiet after several minutes. “I told Parker those files should go to him, at least for the kids.”

Adrian glanced up, surprised that was what came out of the man. He supposed he was still waiting for the shoe to drop over their shared kiss. “Why do you say that?”

“Because those are his daddy’s winnings. I know that much. They don’t have anything to do with the ranch.” He crossed his arms and settled in the chair, closing his eyes. He looked tired again and pale. “The dates those accounts were opened match his last few rides. There wasn’t any mention of them in the will, either. They were created and forgotten,” he said. Words were beginning to slur, and he slumped more into the chair, like his entire body had given out.

Adrian waited for him to stretch…or something. “Kyle, are you feeling okay?”

“Be fine in a minute,” he mumbled. He didn’t open his eyes.

Adrian was out of the chair like lightning, grabbing for his testing kit out of his things as he rounded the desk. In seconds, he had a lancet loaded and was drawing blood.

“Fuck. Damn you, Kyle!” he growled at the dangerously low sugar count. He reached for the phone and called nine-one-one. “I need an ambulance. Thirty-six-year-old male is going into hypoglycemic shock. I don’t know when he last ate. He’s been out in the heat since at least six this morning.” He followed directions and found a pulse. “It’s fast. He’s sitting up. Okay. I have sugar tabs.”

He dropped the phone by his leg and dove for his case, pulling out a tab. “This better be strong enough.” He popped it into Kyle’s mouth, under his tongue, and held his jaw closed. His breathing was growing erratic, and his face was very pale. “Come on, stubborn. Don’t do this.”

He couldn’t track time, waiting for it to take effect, but he started to breathe more easily. “He’s reacting to the sugar,” Adrian advised the dispatch personnel on the other end of the phone. “Yes, there’s a big oak out front. No dogs; the front door is open.” He checked Kyle’s pulse again. “His pulse is steadier, still fast. My personal tabs are a low dose. He’s never had his sugar checked. I don’t want to give him too many.”

“Kyle! Adrian! There’s an ambulance—” Dillon tore into the office to skid to a shocked stop. “Shit! What happened?”

“Go get the EMTs.
